The Mathews High School varsity soccer team advanced to the Tidewater District tournament championship game and earned a spot in the Region A playoffs after defeating King William on Monday, 3-2.

The Devils ended the regular season with a 4-0 shutout over Middlesex and an 8-3 loss to King William.

In Monday’s playoff, due to a change in formation from previous encounters, Mathews confused tthe home-standing Cavaliers for the first 30 minutes.

"King William came out overconfident, not expecting a game from us," MHS coach Craig Raines said after the victory. "We brought lots of heart and soul into this game tonight, and we hope we can continue to carry it for the rest of this tournament."

Leading the scoring for Mathews was P.J. Johnson on a header from a corner kick by Jacob Johnson. King William tied the score, 1-1, before the half ended but starting off the second half, Mathews continued to control possession which led to a blistering shot from Glenn Musgrove to put the Blue Devils up, 2-1. The Cavaliers answered to tie it but with less than two minutes left, Musgrove dribbled into the heart of the KW defense and placed the ball towards the back post in the game winner.
