The Mathews High School varsity softball team picked up a pair of shutout victories this week over Bruton (10-0) and West Point (4-0). The Devils also lost a close 4-3 contest to AA Poquoson.

Last Wednesday, April 17, MHS hosted Bruton in a game that quickly got out of reach for the visiting Panthers. The Devils had no trouble hitting off the Bruton pitcher. Senior Taylor Denton hit her second two-run homer of the week in a game that was called after five innings because of the mercy rule. Contributing hits for the Devils were Taylor South (3-for-4), Hunter Thomas and Denton (2-for-3), Carole Bell, Kayla Robins, Lexus Walton and Savanna Wooten (1-for-2), Kelly Adams (1-for-1), and Bailey Kujawski (1-for-4).
