Gloucester High School varsity softball players remained tied with Menchville for first place in the Peninsula District this week. With their only loss being at the hands of the Monarchs, the Dukes will get a chance to break the tie tomorrow when they are scheduled for another meeting with Menchville in Newport News.
Morgan Haywood (2-0) pitched a two-hitter in Gloucester’s 29-1 win over Heritage on Tuesday. She also had four hits and three RBIs as the Dukes improved to 10-1. Makayla Jenkins added three hits and five RBIs that included a booming grand slam to center field in the third inning.
Tori Brown had two hits and five RBIs and Alissa Upton had two hits and three RBIs for Gloucester. Shelby Alto also contributed three hits in the win.
A two-out, walk-off home run by Devon Smith in the seventh inning got the Dukes past Warwick 1-0 on Monday. Smith’s blast over the left fielder’s head supported the 13-strikeout performance by Jenkins on the mound. Jenkins earned the first nine outs of the game with strikes.
Jenkins ran into trouble in the fifth when Gloucester committed two errors. However, the Raiders made a base running error of their own between third and home for the second out of the inning. With two outs and a runner on second, Alto made a nice catch on a line drive to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.
With a runner on first in the seventh, Jenkins struck out the number five and six Warwick batters to set up a wild bottom of the seventh. Jenkins led off with a single and runner Brook Street stole second but was thrown out trying to score on a single from Haywood.
