The Mathews High School varsity baseball team continued to build on what is now a six-game win streak, as the Blue Devils defeated the Essex Trojans and the Northumberland Indians in games last week. Starting the season with a 0-2 record, they have been on a roll ever since.
The Essex Trojans had a confident mentality as they hosted the Devils on Wednesday, March 27, having slaughtered the Blue Devils, 12-1, in the prior matchup between the two. Aiming to take revenge, Mathews did exactly that, winning 5-1.
An RBI double by Austin Kemp started the scoring in the top of the first inning, and a four-run third inning aided by errors from the Essex defense boosted Mathews to a 5-0 lead. Will Harrington threw 4
1/3 phenomenal shutout innings to pick up his second victory on the season, and Logan Byrns allowed one run in 12/3 innings, shortly before Colin Cook shut the door in the seventh to finish off the victory.
Paul Burnette and Kemp (2-for-3, two doubles) each supplied the only two RBIs for Mathews with Deondre Foster and Darian Beale also supplying hits.
