Representatives of the Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ track teams traveled to Charles City Saturday to take part in their first invitational of the 2013 season.
Facing off against 19 other squads, spread out between A, AA, and even some AAA schools, the Blue Devils managed to take home a 15th place finish for the girls, with a score of nine points overall, and an 18th place finish for the boys, with seven points.
For the girls, freshman Mariah Robinson took a 36th place finish in the 100m dash with a time of 14.96 seconds, and a 31st place finish in the 200m dash, at 31.94 seconds. Fellow freshman Shyanne Gordon took 16th overall in both the 100m hurdles (20.2 seconds) and the 300m hurdles (58.98 seconds).
Senior Sabrina Myers pulled off an impressive seventh-place finish in the 1600m run with a time of 6:39, as well as a tie for ninth in the high jump (4’6"), and 19th in the discus throw (58"), alongside fellow throwers senior Amber Cantrell, who placed eighth with a throw of 69’8", and Veronica Cummings, who was 10th (67’3"). Senior captain Jessie Nelson took eighth overall in the high jump (4’8") and 23rd in the long jump (12’5"). In addition, the girls’ relay teams took 12th in the 4x100 (1:02.02) and 10th in the 4x400 (4:57.19).
