The Mathews High School varsity baseball team picked up its first win of the season last Thursday night, topping the Rappahannock Raiders in the second game of a home doubleheader.
The first game ended up in the hands of Rappahannock, as the Raiders allowed only two runs en route to a 3-2 victory. After the first five-inning affair, Mathews, which played as the away team in the second game, jumped out a 6-0 lead by the first inning. After another six-run outburst in the top of the fourth and two more in the fifth, the Blue Devils ended the night with a 14-3 triumph.
William Smith started the first game for the Blue Devils, going two innings and allowing all of the Raiders’ three runs before the ball was handed to senior Josh Wilson, who solidly finished up the last three innings by allowing no more runs to come across the plate.
Wilson also drove in one of two Devil runs and was one of two offensive bright spots for MHS along with senior Ryan Ewell, who provided the only base hit of game one.
