The Mathews High School varsity softball team is entering this season with a very young team. Returning players are seniors Taylor Denton and Kayla Robins, juniors Lexus Walton, Amanda Miller and Carole Bell, and sophomores Taylor South, Bailey Kujawski, Madison Owens, Hunter Thomas and Kelly Adams. New to the varsity are sophomore Allison Foster and freshmen Savanna Wooten and Robyn Barrack.

The Lady Blue Devils traveled to New Kent on Monday to face the Lady Trojans in a pre-season scrimmage. The MHS girls came prepared and ready to start the season, opening up a two-run lead in the top of the first inning.

Although they started out hot, they couldn’t pull through for the win, falling 8-3. All three of the Mathews pitchers threw a great game: Robins had four strikeouts, Owens had three, and Adams had one.
