The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team easily defeated King and Queen last Wednesday to clinch the Tidewater District regular season title.

With the win, Mathews finished with a 7-1 district record and will enter the district tournament as the top seed, scheduled to face King William last night. Results from that game were not available at press time.

In their final contest last Wednesday, the Lady Blue Devils jumped out to a 17-5 first-quarter lead, widening the gap to 29-6 at the half against the over-matched Lady Tigers. From there, Mathews never looked back in defeating the visitors, 56-19.

Due to sickness and injury, Mathews played the contest with 10 players. However, coach Allie Robins was able to substitute freely and the team is expected to be at full strength entering post-season play.
