The Gloucester High School junior varsity football squad closed the season with a 14-7 win over the visiting Warwick Raiders on Nov. 3. The victory was the fourth consecutive win for the junior Dukes and gave them a winning season at 5-4.

GHS jayvee head coach Ryan Wenner provided some details from the season finale. Wenner said his players came out a little cold but after an onside kick from Watkins Yeager, the Dukes marched down the field slowly and methodically to get their first touchdown.

"They were a real good team, bigger than us, and they had only lost two games this year," Wenner said of the opponents. "We controlled the ball for most of the fist half, but we gave up a couple of big passing plays and went into the half tied, 7-7. These guys have shown so much heart all year long. I stressed to them at halftime to take the field in the second half as a team and a family, and that no one could take our season away from us."

Wenner said the second-half opening drive was jumpstarted by a spectacular run by Chris Lee on a third-and-long play. "I’m proud of all these guys, the way they came out and played for this team. My offensive line told me to just keep running the ball behind them and they’d get us the yards. We marched down the field to take the lead going into the fourth quarter. Defense did the rest."
