The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team picked up straight-set victories over Northern Neck opponents Essex and Lancaster last week.
The Lady Devils also competed in Saturday’s Endless Summer Tournament, moving up in a tougher division from last year to win only two of five matches.
Last Thursday, the MHS girls traveled to Essex for the second in a three-game away streak. After a slow start, the Devils soon picked up the pace. Essex played an excellent game against the Devils, digging up a lot of what their aggressive offense threw at them. In the end, the Devils prevailed three sets to none, 25-16, 25-17 and 26-24. There were no individual stats due to technical difficulty.
On Saturday, the team traveled to Hampton to take part in the Endless Summer Tournament. In years past, the Devils have been placed in the lowest division of the tournament and have won it with ease. However, in light of their recent success, the Lady Devils were moved up to the AAA division where they were the only single A school competing. They went 2-3 on the day losing to three tough teams.
Mathews competed against eventual tournament champion Princess Anne, Powhatan, Great Bridge, Cox high schools and Musselman from West Virginia.
The MHS girls were able to overtake Powhatan and Great Bridge to take second in their pool, dropping them into the silver division. Then they faced off with Musselman, losing a close match, and played a consolation match against Cox where against they lost a close one. The day was a great success and the Devils took home a lot of experience.
