The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team is 2-0 following opening week wins over Lafayette and Windsor.
Last Thursday night, the Lady Devils traveled to Williamsburg to take on the Lafayette Rams for the second time. The two teams faced off in the MHS Jamboree over a week ago, but this time it was an entirely different game.
In the Jamboree, the Lady Devils dominated, taking two games easily from the Rams, but in their first official match of the season, the Devils were caught slightly off guard and had to step up their game fast.
The Devils struggled a little with getting a good pass, but took the first set 25-20. They fell into a hole in the second set, falling 23-25. In the third set, the Devils played their game and took the Rams 25-21. In the next set, Lafayette won 27-25. Going into a fifth and deciding set, the Devils overtook the Rams 15-8 for the win.
"It was exciting to compete against a team that offered a higher level of competition than we usually see this early on in the season," junior middle hitter Jacqueline Stewart said.
Standouts for the Devils included Maddie McCann with 20 kills, Mackenzie Moughon with 19, Kai McCann with three kills, and Hannah Rowe and Jackie Stewart with one kill apiece. Rachel Close led with four aces followed by McCann with three, Anna Hudgins and Moughon with two each, and Rowe with one. Shelby Ware collected 39 assists for the night. Moughon led the team on defense with 29 digs followed by Close with 26, McCann with 13,Ware with seven, Hudgins and Kai McCann with five each, and Stewart and Rowe with three apiece. Stewart contributed with five blocks from the middle.
