Little League doesn’t have a World Series tournament for the 9- and 10-year-old minor age group, so the invitational was the team’s ultimate chance to shine.

In spite of the team’s record, which included two wins out of three games in the pool-style regional tournament against six other state champion teams and the host team, Luray, the Mathews girls were unable to advance.

In a pool tournament, advancing depends on the number of runs scored against a team—the fewer runs a team gives up, the better, team manager J.J. Ashberry explained.

Mathews played its first game late Friday night, beating West Virginia 2-0. But the girls had to play against North Carolina at 9 o’clock the next morning and, exhausted, they gave up seven runs and scored only two in the girls’ second loss of the All-Star season.

Although they came back with a 17–6 win against South Carolina on Sunday, they had 13 runs against them, said Ashberry. This put them even with North Carolina in runs given up, but because Mathews lost to North Carolina on Saturday, North Carolina was ahead. West Virginia gave up the fewest number of runs, so only that team and North Carolina were able to advance from the pool of four teams.
