The 47th annual Virginia Governor’s Cup Regatta will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Ware River Yacht Club. In conjunction with the annual sailing event, WRYC is also hosting the Sunfish Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship this weekend.
Classes expected to compete in the Governor’s Cup include Sunfish, Albacore, Hampton OD, Buccaneer, Laser, Mobjack, Mutineer, 505, Flying Scot and Frontrunner. Other classes are also invited to participate. Classes with fewer than five boats will be grouped with similar classes and race under the Portsmouth handicap system.
The regatta begins with registration from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. Registration is $30 for single hand classes and $40 for crewed classes. A skipper’s meeting is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday and the first race signal will be at noon. Racing resumes Sunday at noon and awards presentations are scheduled for 3 p.m.
The Governor’s Cup trophy is awarded to the winner of the one design class with the largest number of qualified starts in the regatta. Another top trophy, the Gloucester Chamber of Commerce Cup, is awarded to the top youth skipper and the Congressman’s Cup is awarded for sportsmanship. Trophies will also go to the top three finishers of classes with five or more competitors.
