The Deltaville Deltas’ 2011 season came to an end last weekend, as they fell twice in the Southern Virginia Baseball League playoff tournament.

Deltaville fell to the Peninsula Cardinals, 14-2, on Saturday night, and to the York Cannons, 5-3, on Sunday afternoon. The losses dropped the Deltas final record to 17-6.

Going into the championship weekend, the second-seeded Peninsula Pirates (15-7), third-seeded Cannons (15-9), and fourth-seeded Cardinals (12-10) are the only teams remaining. The Pirates will play for the tournament championship on Sunday against the winner of Saturday’s Cannons-Cardinals matchup.

Cardinals 14, Deltas 2

One disastrous inning was all it took to doom the Deltas on Saturday night, as the Cardinals used a 12-run third inning to cruise to a 14-2 victory.

With the game still scoreless, seven out of the first eight Cardinals in the third inning reached base. Sixteen batters and three Deltaville pitchers later, the Cardinals had amassed a 12-0 lead.

The Deltas offense did not lie down, however. Ryan Wiggins singled and scored on a Luke Kirk double in the bottom half of the inning, and the offense collected eight hits. The Cardinals’ offensive machine would not let the Deltas back into the game, however, plating two runs on a pair of doubles in the fifth. The Deltas manufactured a run in the seventh, but it was far too little, too late.

Jay Moore took the loss on the mound, his first of the season, allowing five runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings. Reliever Kyle Hall was tagged for five runs on two hits and three walks over 1/3 of an inning, and Will Barrack pitched the final 4 1/3 innings, allowing four runs.
