MHS girls win district tennis title

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team picked up wins over West Point and Middlesex to claim the Tidewater District team title.

Hosting West Point last Tuesday, May 10, the Lady Blue Devils went undefeated in all matches, winning 9-0. Mathews also defeated Middlesex by a 9-0 margin last Thursday.

Top-seeded Morgan Sears defeated West Point’s Sara Dudley (6-2, 6-2) and Rachel Mantell of Middlesex (6-0, 6-0) and went on to play with Rachel Byrd to win in the two doubles matches. Byrd, #4 seed, won her singles matches by margins of 6-1, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-0.

Second- and third-seed singles players Amy Collins and Aly Collins also posted wins in both singles and doubles matches. Amy won, 6-3, 6-3 against Miranda Carver of West Point and 6-1, 6-0 over Kelly Wilson of Middlesex; Aly beat Taylor Cline of West Point, 6-1, 6-1, and 6-0, 6-0 over Taylor Killian. Together, they easily won their doubles matches.
