The Mathews High School jayvee softball team continued its winning ways this past week, defeating West Point twice, as well as Middlesex and Northumberland.
Last Thursday, in the girls’ first Tidewater District game, Mathews came back from an early 3-0 deficit to defeat the Lady Pointers, 13-6.
Hannah Rowe had three hits to lead the Lady Devils. Carole Bell and Emily Hudgins each had two hits, while Harley Trammell and Hunter Thomas had one hit a piece. Allison Foster started on the mound for Mathews, pitching four innings and Kelly Adams closed the game out for Mathews.
The following night, Mathews traveled to Middlesex to face the Lady Chargers. Mathews jumped all over the hosts, taking a 9-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Although Middlesex cut the margin to 9-3, Mathews remained in control, eventually winning 16-3.
Bailey Kujawski and Bell each picked up three hits in the win. Hannah Rowe, Adams and Trammell had two hits and Amanda Miller, Mallory Sanger, Thomas, Foster, and Hudgins each had one hit apiece.
