The Gloucester High School crew returned from the Virginia Scholastic Rowing Championships this weekend with gold and silver. The Gloucester men’s junior four continued an undefeated season with first place and the senior four women took second in their race at the regatta at the Sandy Run Regional Park in Occoquan last weekend.
Racing in the junior four, Jacob Cheatham, Joel Kidd, Adam Hedrick, Jeremy Frush and coxswain Kyle Mielnik earned gold medals with their time of 5:09.1. The previously undefeated senior four of Kristen Hickman, Elizabeth Keane, Kendall Worland, Elaina Arsenovic and coxswain Matt Hendrix won its heat in 5:40.5 but was second behind McLean with a time of 5:34.8 in the final.
Chris Smith competed again as a single for GHS and placed fourth among his larger, more seasoned competitors with a time of 6:16.2 in the final. The senior four of Chris Boehm, David Collins, Logan Hutson, Kenny Giddings and coxswain John Hogge was second in the heat in 5:12.3 but only shaved a tenth of a second off of that time in the final and finished fifth.
