The Mathews High School crew came back from Saturday’s Virginia Scholastic Rowing Championship Regatta at the Sandy Run Regional Park in Occoquan with bronze medals in the men’s senior four and women’s senior quad events.
First up was the men’s senior four, with Mathews rowers Zach Payne, Phillip Machen, Andrew Merz, Cole Johnson and coxswain Trevor Thomas facing 14 other entries. The Blue Devils raced in the third of three morning qualifying heats with two to move on to the afternoon’s six-boat final.
Mathews qualified by taking second (5:06) to T. C. Williams (5:03.6) and eliminating Norfolk Academy (5:09.3), Langley (5:12.7), and Washington-Lee (6:03.7).
The final was a tight race from start to finish with T.C. Williams, Woodbridge and Mathews battling for the lead. At the line, Williams captured the gold (5:03.1), Woodbridge the silver (5:04.6) and Mathews the bronze (5:06.2), followed by Madison (5:08.9), Gloucester (5:12.2) and First Colonial (5:17.4).
