Mathews ties Chargers 4-4 in soccer

The Mathews High School varsity soccer team played Middlesex to a 4-4 tie last Wednesday, May 11. Each team scored two goals in the first half and two more in the second, but could not score in overtime.

Grant Avery led with two goals; Will Sease and Glenn Musgrove provided the rest of the scoring. Jacob Johnson, Chris Barnhardt, Cody Greenfield and Matt DeForge had one assist each. The Devils had 19 shots on goal, while Mathews goalie Carter Vrooman recorded 15 saves.

The Blue Devils complete the regular season on Friday, when they travel to Windsor in Isle of Wight County to face the Dukes, starting at 5:30 p.m.

Mathews is hosting an alumni game on Sunday, starting at 3:30 p.m. Tickets for the fundraiser are $8 and include a cookout afterwards at the adjacent Parks and Recreation field. Tickets are available from any MHS soccer player.
