The Mathews High School jayvee soccer team beat the Middlesex Chargers, 4-3, last Wednesday in an exciting game on the Chargers’ home field.
In the first half, Mathews tried out a new formation that focused more on offense. This proved to be very successful, and the Devils came out and scored three goals in the opening minutes. Adam Wade, Megan Zeller and P. J. Johnson were responsible for these goals. Toward the end of the half, Middlesex was able to score one goal.
In the second half, Middlesex put two more goals in, with Johnson scoring the game winner for Mathews.
New goalie Jack Vrooman played an outstanding game, only letting in three of the 19 Middlesex shots on goal. Mathews had a total on 17 shots on goals, led by Johnson with seven, Zeller with three, Justin Jenkins and Wade with two apiece, and Natalie McElroy, Hans Saunders and Anna Hudgins with one each.
