The men’s varsity four and the women’s single were the only Mathews boats to place on Saturday at the Al Urquia Regatta at Occoquan.
Andrew Merz, Phillip Machen, Zach Payne, Cole Johnson and coxswain Trevor Thomas won their qualifying heat, advancing to the final, where they placed third behind Woodbridge (5:55.1) and Gloucester (5:57.4) with a time of 5:49.9, beating entries from Woodrow Wilson, Madison and South County.
The Mathews men’s novice four lost some ground this week, as they struggled with a new lineup. Adrian Phillips, Tucker Blackwell, Matt Oliver, Bill Reilly and coxswain Tyler Zabel took fifth (6:35.6) behind W.T. Woodson, Wilson, Bishop O’Connell and Hampton (New York), and ahead of West Potomac.
On the girls’ side, Mathews entered the single and the varsity quad. Chelsea Jones braved tough conditions in the single, which was the first event of the day. Hylton won by open water and Jones found herself in a battle for second, where a Gar-Field entry nipped her by 3.2 seconds, with fourth place going to St. Stephens.
