by Amanda Hudgins
The Mathews High School soccer team split a pair of games with the Lancaster Red Devils by identical 2-1 margins on Friday and Monday.
On Friday, Mathews hosted the Red Devils. Because it was the final day of Spring Break, Mathews was playing a little short-handed, with only 12 of the Blue Devils’ usual 17 players suited up and ready to play.
That didn’t seem to matter, though, as Mathews recorded 16 shots on goal, supplied by Will Sease, Grant Avery, Jacob Johnson, Chris Barnhardt, Matt Marquardt, Ryan Morgan and Ben Wood. Barnhardt scored the first goal for Mathews, with Morgan kicking the game winner. Carter Vrooman had nine keeper saves.
MHS traveled to Lancaster Monday for another close game with the Northern Neck District foes. Mathews held a 1-0 advantage for most of the game, thanks to a goal by Sease, assisted by Glenn Musgrove. Sease had two other shots on goal, while Tyler Tillman, Matt DeForge, Musgrove, Wood and Morgan had one apiece.
Lancaster slipped in two goals late in the game, including one in the closing minutes to take the win. Vrooman had 12 saves for Mathews.
