GHS track hosts invitational Saturday

The Gloucester High School track and field team has successfully competed in two Peninsula District meets and two invitationals in preparation for hosting its own GHS Invitational Meet on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.

The team opened the season against Bethel and Woodside on March 22. The Gloucester girls won over both opponents but the boys’ team fell short by a few points. Freshman Natalie Bueker was third in the 100-meter dash in 13.68, second in the 400 meter in 1:02.93, and second in the high jump by clearing 4’11". Bueker also won the long jump with a leap of 15’7.5" and senior Jaelynn Bennett was third with a jump of 13’5.5".

Senior Elisabeth Drake won the mile in 5:51 and placed second in the 800-meter race in 2:43.48. Freshman Emily Manzanares was third in the mile in 5:58.60. Senior Jazmine Banks sent the discus 76’7.5" to win that event, junior Haley Lucas was second with a throw of 63’8"and freshman Khadijah Payne was third with 45’10". Lucas won the shot put with a toss of 26’11", sophomore Haley Toups was second with 25’1" and Payne was third with 22’3".

On the boys’ side, junior Kevin Speray won the mile race in 4:58.18, followed by twin brother Eric Speray in 5:05.79. Junior Tyler Price dominated the two-mile run in 11:02.92, sophomore Blake Waters was second in 11:08.89 and sophomore Zach Whitson was third in 11:43.69. Junior Da’Rontae Carter was second in the 800 meter event in 2:18.41 and senior Shamar Marsh was third in the 100 meter dash in 11.65. Junior Davonte Smith won the high jump by clearing 5’6" and junior Mark Greenauer was second with 5’2".

Senior Robert Freiermuth won the pole vault with 11’6", freshman James Scott won the triple jump with 38’10", sophomore Jarrell Bennett was third in the shot put with 39’9.5" and Marsh was third in the long jump with 19’7.5". The Gloucester boys also combined to win the 400, 1,600 and 3,200 meter relay events.

The Dukes next participated in the annual Conn-Madden relays on March 26 at Todd Stadium. Sophomore Evan Wagner dominated the girls’ high jump by clearing five feet and Banks won the shot put with 32’9.25". The high jump relay team of Wagner and Bueker was third overall with 4’6", the discus team of Banks and Lucas was third with 63 feet and the shot put team of Banks, Lucas (23’9.75") and Toups (22’10.50") was also third.
