Four Mathews High School wrestlers placed at the state tournament, which was held on Friday and Saturday at the Salem Civic Center.
C.W. Sorey was the highest-finishing Blue Devil, capturing second place in the 171-lb. weight class. James Pavik (189 lbs.) placed fifth in the state, while Caleb Miller (103 lbs.) and Russell Reed (152 lbs.) came in seventh and eighth, respectively.
Manassas Park won the event with 169.5 team points; Mathews finished in 13th place with 49 points.
Seven MHS wrestlers qualified for the trip to Salem, which head coach Tom Holaday said was pretty good for what he called a rebuilding year.
Sorey went 3-1 in the competition, pinning Tim Woods of Glenvar in the first round, and scoring an 11-3 decision over Treavor Hedrick of Buffalo Gap in the quarterfinals. Sorey earned a bid to the championship bout with a 9-2 decision over Jeremy Mullins of Coeburn.
In the state title match, Sorey lost to Ricky Tisinger of Stonewall Jackson in a second-period pin. After a scoreless first period, Sorey took bottom in the second period. Sorey was in the process of standing up when Tisinger put a cradle hold on him and pinned him to the mat.
