The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team, after winning its final two games, came up short against West Point Monday night, 43-28, in a playoff for the Tidewater District regular season crown.
The second-seed Lady Devils were scheduled to host Middlesex last night in the first round of the Tidewater District tournament. The winner of that game advances to Friday’s championship at King William against either the Pointers or Cavaliers.
On Feb. 9, Mathews defeated Middlesex in OT, 53-45. The lead went back and forth during regulation play, with Maggie Scribe scoring an easy layup to tie the game at 41-41 at the buzzer.
Leading scorers were Sharese Jarvis with 17 points and Lindsay Collins with 15 points. Also scoring were Mackenzie Moughon with 11 points, Sydney Morgan with six, Scribe with two and Forrest with one.
