Russell Reed was the top male and overall winner in the Wesley Ashberry 5K Twilight Walk/Run held on Saturday at Williams Wharf Landing in Mathews. Competing in the 14-17 age group, Reed had a time of 17 minutes and 43 seconds.
The top female winner was Heather Hudgins, competing in the 30-39 age group, with a time of 22:41.
The event raised $3,096.60 to benefit The Denbigh House, a non-profit facility that offers vocational rehabilitation programs for Hampton Roads and Middle Peninsula residents with head injuries.
Organizer Theresa Ashberry said the success of the event was due to the support of the Mathews County Lions Club, Brain Injury Law Center, Tree of Life, Riverside Walter Reed Hospital, Lynne’s Family Restaurant, Holly Hill Farms, and Charlie and Vickie Carter.
In addition to Reed and Hudgins, the top overall male and female trophy winners were: Douglas Marshall (age 30-39, 17:49; Carson Towne (18-29) 20:34; Karen McClelland (18-29) 24:41; and Kate VanEmmerik (14-17) 25:40.
Taking race medals in their age groups were:
Men: Ages 9 and under—Braden Hunley (30:21); ages 10-13—Logan Touchstone (23:07); ages 40-49—Andrew D’Amico (20:36); ages 50-59—Dave Hershiser (24:15); 60 and over—John Butrick (35:08).
Women: ages 10-13—Keely Crittenden (34:13); ages 40-49—Carol Steele (38:00), ages 50-59—Mary Jane Allen (29:47); 60 and over—Mona Beatty (51:07).
