The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team picked up two wins following a weeklong break for exams, and now is tied with West Point for first place in the Tidewater District standings.

Mathews traveled to Northumberland on Saturday for a return matchup with the Northern Neck foe. The last contest went into overtime, and while the rematch was close, the Devils won, 48-40.

Mathews took the lead in the fourth quarter, as the Lady Indians got into foul trouble. Leading the way for the Lady Devils were Mackenzie Moughon with 16 points and Lindsay Collins with 14 points. Also scoring were Kaitlin Eriksen with 10, Sharese Jarvis with seven, and Angela Sale with one point.

Mathews pulled out a 51-49 thriller Monday over West Point in a key Tidewater District contest. The Pointers had previously defeated the Lady Devils six straight games, and with first place up for grabs, this game would prove to be monumental.
