The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team had a good week, beating the visiting Nandua Warriors and the Middlesex Chargers on the Lady Devils’ home court.
MHS crushed Nandua last Thursday by a 75-21 margin. Mathews took advantage of the Lady Warriors’ slow-moving defense to take a commanding 29-9 lead in the first half. Returning from the halftime break, the Lady Devils didn’t let up, tacking on 46 more points and the Warriors to 14.
Coach Robert Thomas was very pleased with the performance of his team and also applauded the underclassmen for the way they stepped up during the game. Thomas was able to get all of his players numerous minutes on the floor, with all of the Lady Devils scored at least two points.
Leading scorers were Sharese Jarvis with 13 points, Megan Zeller with 12, and Kaitlin Eriksen with 10. Also scoring were Mackenzie Moughon, Sydney Morgan and Taylor Denton with eight, seven and six points respectively. Ashley Forest and Lindsay Collins contributed four each, Maggie Scribe, Emily Brown and Sarah Burnette added three points each and Angela Sale had two.
