MHS wrestlers drop two, beat W&L

The Mathews High School wrestling team dropped a pair of dual matches, and also posted a win over Washington and Lee in recent action.

Last Wednesday, Jan. 12, the Blue Devils hosted Norfolk Collegiate School, with the visiting Oaks winning. 41-27. Winning for Mathews were Elisha Kane (112 lbs.), who scored a pin against K.J. Edmond in 22 seconds; Matt Rouland (125 lbs.), who pinned Michael Ortiz in 1:23; Billy Bower (160 lbs.), who pinned Austin Smith in 2:38; C.W. Sorey (171 lbs.), who won an 11-4 decision against Jamie Crabbs; and Willie Moore (285 lbs.), who pinned Daniel Blue in 1:03.

James Pavik (189 lbs.) and Russell Reed (152 lbs.) lost close 6-4 and 4-2 decisions, respectively. Caleb Miller (103 lbs.), Jamie Perigny (130 lbs.), Austin Jones (135 lbs.), Matt Marquardt (140 lbs.) and Jeremiah Wheat (215 lbs.) lost to their Norfolk Collegiate opponents by pin.

MHS wrestlers also competed in exhibition matches with Norfolk Collegiate. Miller, Sam Moore (112 lbs.) and Dusty Moore (285 lbs.) won their bouts, while Jones, Hans Saunders (160 lbs.), A.J. White (145 lbs.) and Bradley Wood (171 lbs.) lost.
