The Mathews High School jayvee girls’ basketball team picked up a pair of wins at home this past week, defeating Nandua by a 31-15 margin and beating district rival Middlesex, 32-25.
Mathews had little difficulty controlling the tempo in last Thursday’s game against Nandua, holding the visiting Warriors scoreless in the first quarter and taking a 13-4 lead into the locker room.
Mathews post players thoroughly dominated the Lady Warriors, as the Devils’ top three scorers came from their forwards/centers: Hannah Rowe (17 points), Kai McCann (five points) and Jessi Nelson (three points). Also contributing were Jessie Zeller, Bailey Kujawski and Shanice Williams with two points apiece.
Mathews faced the previously unbeaten Middlesex Chargers on Saturday. Cheered on by a home crowd, the Lady Devils took a 12-10 lead into the halftime break, in spite of missing a number of scoring opportunities. "We had a few girls that did not play up to their potential in the first half, they constantly got out-rebounded and outhustled by Middlesex," coach Tommy Eriksen said.
