The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team picked up wins over Northern Neck foes Rappahannock and Lancaster, and falling to district rival West Point this week.
The Lady Devils topped the Rappahannock Raiders, 48-15, on Friday night. With the home crowd behind them, Mathews took a 26-11 halftime lead. With ample playing time for all and strong defense, MHS shut out the Lady Raiders in the third quarter to cruise to the win.
Leading scorers were Sharese Jarvis with 14 points, followed by Emily Brown and Taylor Denton with six each. Lindsay Collins chipped in five points, while Megan Zellar and Kaitlin Eriksen added four each. Ashley Forrest contributed three points and Mackenzie Moughon, Maggie Scribe and Sarah Burnette added two each.
MHS squared off Saturday against Lancaster for the second time this season. Mathews played well on defense and held the Lady Red Devils to only 11 points going into halftime and taking a 36-18 lead entering the final period. In the fourth quarter, Mathews slacked off and the Lady Red Devils took advantage of it, constantly pushing the ball up the court. The valiant effort by the visiting team fell short though, and Mathews hung on for a 41-31 victory.
