The Mathews High School varsity football team capped off its 2010 season Friday night with a dominating victory over the visiting Middlesex Chargers, 49-3. The win improved the team’s overall record to 5-5; 2-2 in the Tidewater District.
This is the second time in the season that the Devils defeated their neighbors from across the Piankatank River; on Sept. 3, Mathews beat Middlesex, 51-14, in a game that did not count in district standings.
Chris Davis had 15 carries for 106 yards and two rushing touchdowns. Davis had three other touchdowns in the game—a punt return and two kickoff returns for scores. He gained a total of 234 yards in the lopsided win.
Anthony Forrest had seven carries for 72 yards and a touchdown. C.J. Kelly caught a 44-yard touchdown pass, and James Pavik had two receptions for 48 yards. Quarterback Michael Cunningham completed six of eight passes for 103 yards.
