The Mathews High School varsity football team fell to 3-6 (1-2 in the Tidewater District), after losing Friday night’s game against the homestanding West Point Pointers, 43-20.
Chris Davis rushed for 106 yards on 16 carries, while C.J. Kelly and Anthony Forrest had 51- and 27-yard touchdown receptions to provide most of the Blue Devils’ offensive spark. Quarterback Michael Cunningham (5-for-14 for 96 yards passing) had a one-yard TD run for the other MHS score.
"I was not disappointed with our team’s effort," MHS head coach Paul White said after Friday’s loss. "We played hard, and I learned something valuable from my high school coach, Coach Todd (legendary Gloucester High School coach Turnley Todd)—Win with class and compete at all times. I never felt like we were out of the game until late in the fourth quarter because we played with emotion and effort."
