The Mathews High School men’s varsity four missed claiming the gold medal by .19 of a second at Saturday’s Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association Championships in Occoquan.

In addition to the silver medal finish of the men’s varsity four, MHS crew also took bronze in the men’s double, while the women made it to two finals, taking second in the women’s varsity four Petite Finals.

First out for the men, Alec Thompson, Josh Miles, Jared Reay, Zach Cummings and coxswain Alyssa Curko qualified for the semifinals with the second fastest time of four men’s junior four heats. A bad start in the semis put the mostly novice crew out of the finals.

The men’s double event had eight entries racing for state medals where Gus Bauby and Bill Riley made the finals taking bronze and a younger Caleb Johnson and Tyler Riley missing the finals in their first attempt at racing the double. For the premier men’s varsity four event, Blue Devils Phillip Machen, Kyle Moran, Tucker Blackwell, Lance South and cox Kaitlyn Thompson pulled the fastest time of 16 entries in the qualifying heats.
