The Mathews High School varsity soccer team hasn’t been able to catch a break in conference contests, losing both the home West Point game in overtime and the away King William game last week. The Devils lost to West Point in a 3-2 match on Monday.
On May 7, the Devils played West Point at home in a tough 2-1 loss. West Point scored in the first half to take an early lead and possession went back and forth between the Devils and the Pointers
At a turning point for Mathews, Ricky Rutter took a free kick from midfield and sent the ball high towards the goal, where it connected with P.J. Johnson’s head to create a 1-1 tie at the end of the second half.
In overtime, the playing field was even through the first five minutes until West Point scored its final goal in the last minute. The final score was 2-1.
