After beginning the season with a lone win through the first seven games of the season, the Mathews High School varsity baseball team came out strong against district opponent Charles City.
The game fell into the hands of the Blue Devils early and only lasted five innings, as the Devils took the victory by a final score of 34-0.
A couple of nights later, the Blue Devils found themselves on the other end of a lopsided score, losing to Northumberland, 7-1. Junior Willie Fernald would start for the Devils, and through 3 2/3 innings, he was solid enough to only allow two runs, neither of them earned. Unfortunately, his efforts were backed by only a single run via a Brett Hogge RBI single in the bottom of the fifth.
