The Mathews High School varsity softball team added three wins and a single loss this week to improve its season record to 3-4.
Last Wednesday, April 2, the Lady Devils lost to the visiting Poquoson Islanders by a score of 2-1. The lone MHS run came in the fifth inning when Taylor South led off the inning with a single, Savanna Wooten laid down a sacrifice bunt to move South to second, and Amanda Miller singled to left field allowing South to cross the plate.
Offensive standouts were Taylor South (2-for-3, two singles) and Miller (2-for-3, single, double, RBI). Keely Crittenden, Lexie Miles and Madison South each contributed a single. Kelly Adams pitched the entire game for the Devils, surrendering nine hits while striking out three and allowing no walks.
The Mathews team participated in an invitational tournament in Lancaster on Friday and Saturday, competing against Lancaster, Rappahannock County and Middlesex. The Devils walked away with three easy wins, outscoring their opponents 43-1, ending each of the three games in five innings due to the slaughter rule. In their first game on Friday night, the Mathews shutout the Lancaster Red Devils, 16-0. Mathews, as a team, batted .543 (19-for-35) with each player in the lineup adding at least one hit. Madison Owens led the Devils at the plate going 2-for-3. Other standouts were Madison South (3-for-4), Carole Bell (3-for-5), Crittenden (3-for-5), and Miles (2-for-4). Taylor South, Allison Foster, Wooten, Miller and Hunter Thomas each added a single. Adams pitched the first two innings, allowing no hits, no walks, and striking out two. Madison South pitched the final three innings, allowing only two hits and a walk while striking out three.
