The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team kicked off its season strong with an 8-1 win over Gloucester last Wednesday at Gloucester High School. With one returning player from last year’s top six varsity starters, this year’s young squad met the challenge against the 5A South team.

The Lady Devils secured their win right away, winning five of the six singles matches. Elizabeth Ransone played a well-fought match, but fell to Gloucester’s Olivia Edwards 4-8.  Kate van Emmerik defeated her opponent Hope Warren 8-2, and Morgan Johnson won her match against Kirby Lingerfeller, 8-0. Ashley Hudgins won her singles match against Aly Wilkinson 8-1. Also winning their singles matches were Alexis Wells, who defeated her opponent Jordan Simpson 8-3, as well as Rachel Stewart who beat Gloucester’s Rebecca Bish, 8-2. These matches were varsity debuts for Ransone, Johnson, Hudgins, Wells and Stewart.

The Mathews girls continued competing strongly in doubles, with the third-seeded duo of Wells and Stewart winning their match against Sarah Contreras and Lingerfeller, 8-0. Top-seeded doubles Ransone and van Emmerik and second-seed Johnson and Hudgins both won their matches by 8-2 margins over Edwards and Warren and Bish and Wilkinson.

The Lady Devils continued to compete strongly in exhibition matches. Winning their singles matches were Emma Wood (6-1), and Madelyn Johnson (8-0). Katherine Ransone played strongly but fell 2-6 in her singles match. The Mathews girls swept all doubles exhibition matches, totaling six wins in all. Katherine Ransone and Maddie Brown won their match 6-0. Katherine Bray played two doubles matches, winning her first with Madelyn Johnson 8-0 and her second with Chloe Sanderson, winning 5-0. Melanie Slaughter and Bella Silvus beat their opponents 6-1. Brown and Wood played together for their second match of the day, defeating their opponents 6-2. Ali Haynes and Sanderson posted another win for Mathews with a score of 6-4.
