After a 3-0 run in postseason play, the Mathews High School boys’ basketball team stands just one victory away from securing a spot in the VHSL Group 1A state tournament.
The Blue Devils defeated Middlesex and West Point last week to secure the Conference 42 title and kept that win streak alive with a 62-57 win over Franklin on Tuesday in the first round of the regional tournament.
Mathews will head to Lancaster High School on Friday to face Surry in the Region 1A East tournament semifinal. The winner will return to Lancaster on Saturday night for the regional championship game. Friday’s winner will also earn a berth in next week’s VHSL state semifinal game.
As the conference champs, Mathews hosted Franklin on Tuesday night and the Blue Devil crowd filled the stands early for what turned out to be another nail-biter for the fans.
The Broncos and Blue Devils dueled evenly throughout the first quarter, and the second proved no different, as the Devils held a two-point advantage going into the half. The Broncos immediately evaporated the Devils’ lead and were able to tie it up before the start of the fourth, setting up for a repeat of what went on against West Point three days before.
When Franklin grabbed ahold of a three-point lead with only two minutes left to play, the Devils found themselves begging for a possession, and forced multiple turnovers that led to the game-tying points that would send them into overtime.
