The Mathews High School wrestling team squeaked by Middlesex and went on to crush King and Queen to win last Wednesday’s Conference 42 tournament, which was held at Middlesex High School.
The 33-31 victory over Middlesex was the closest dual meet that Mathews coach Tom Holaday has ever coached, with the victory decided by three overtime matches.
At 103 lbs., the teams had a double forfeit. Mathews also forfeited at 120, 126 and 170. Ronald Rife was out sick at 170 lbs., giving Middlesex an 18-point edge in forfeits.
Sam Moore (132 lbs.), Parker Thompson (145 lbs.) and Isaiah Maultsby (220 lbs.) all won in overtime in the nail-biter. Mathews had little trouble with King and Queen, winning 52-12.
Mathews, Middlesex and King and Queen are the only schools in the conference with a wrestling program.
Winning all their matches and earning medals for being conference champions were Moore, Thompson, Tyler Zabel (152 lbs.), A.J. White (182 lbs.), Austin Fravel (195 lbs.), Maultsby and Bill Riley (285 lbs.).
