{image_2} The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team will soon enter its postseason Conference 42 tournament riding a four-game winning streak after picking up three decisive victories during the past week.

Mathews hosted the King William Lady Cavaliers on Thursday and neutralized their all-district guard most of the game. After relying on dependable defense for most of the season, Mathews continues to improve on the offensive side of the ball, attacking the basket at will and getting the low-post players involved.

Leading the Blue Devils in the 54-46 victory was Taylor South with 14 points, Maria Spadaccini with nine while Savanna Wooten and Madison Owens had eight points each. Madison South and Emily Brown contributed four points each, Whitney Eriksen chipped in three and Mariah Robinson and Hannah Rowe added two points apiece.

Facing King and Queen on Monday and Tuesday nights, the Lady Blue Devils had a hard time remaining focused for the beginning of Monday night’s game. Coach Tommy Eriksen found words hard to come by as the home crowd honored the senior players before the game. “You would think as a team we would be on an emotional high with the good home crowd behind us; however, we came out and laid an egg in the first quarter,” he said. King and Queen led the first quarter by a 4-3 margin.  Whatever words were said between quarters seemed to help the hosts as they trounced the visitors the rest of the way and defeated the Lady Tigers, 51-7.

Mathews received balanced scoring throughout the contest, led by Spadaccini’s 11 points. Owens, Brown and Veronica Cosby added six, five and five points, respectively. Rowe, Taylor South and Brittany Mitchem added four points each, while Hunter Thomas added three. Rounding out scoring were Wooten, Robinson, Madison South and Eriksen with two points each.
