The Mathews varsity boys’ basketball team had a handful of district matchups over the past week, all of them being makeup games from recent snow days. The JV Devils sat out the third straight week as they look to play King William tonight for their first game since Jan. 21.
On Saturday night, the varsity Devils hosted the West Point Pointers who, along with the Devils, were undefeated in the district before that night. The Pointers immediately jumped on the Devils, but the Mathews boys came back and made it a close game, unfortunately losing it to West Point in the closing minutes, 67-61. Deondre Foster led the offense with 14 points, while Cody Kelly and Taiwan Forrest followed him with 12 each.
On Monday, the Devils traveled to play another district rival, the Middlesex Chargers. After a close half of play, Mathews took the game away from the Chargers in the second half, as they rolled on to a 65-54 triumph. Foster again led the Devils with 27 points and even added 14 rebounds. Owen Cullison tallied nine of his own points and Kelly had nine as well.
