The Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team picked up a couple of wins during the past week, defeating Chesterfield Community High School on Friday, 77-55, and coming up with a big win over AAA opponent Gloucester, 84-78.
Mathews dominated the visitors from Chesterfield, a game pitting two Conference 42 opponents against one another. Cody Kelly led the Blue Devils with 22 points, Deondre Foster tallied 18, and Taiwan Forrest had 11.
On Tuesday night, Mathews made the short trip over to Gloucester and defeated the Dukes by six points. Mathews played a solid four quarters, holding the lead from the first point to the last.
Foster was the top scorer for Mathews, with 22 points. He was followed by Kelly (17 points) and Chris Perreault (12).
The victory improved the Devils’ record to 6-4 as they near the halfway mark of the season.
The MHS JV team, meanwhile, hadn’t played a game in over three weeks coming into Tuesday night’s game against the visiting Gloucester Dukes. That game was a nail-biter through four quarters, with the Dukes finally coming out on top, 50-45.
