The Mathews High School wrestling team fell to Lancaster and defeated the host Indians in a tri-meet last Wednesday at Northumberland High School. On Saturday, the Blue Devil wrestlers just missed out on a chance to compete in the finals of a 10-team dual tournament at Franklin High School.
Parker Thompson (138 lbs.), Tyler Zabel (152 lbs.), Austin Fravel (195 lbs.) and Isaiah Maultsby (220 lbs.) each went 2-0 last Wednesday, as Mathews defeated Northumberland 42-33 and lost to Lancaster, 39-28.
Thompson, Fravel and Maultsby each went 4-0 on Saturday, as well as Sam Moore (132 lbs.) as the Devils racked up wins over Southampton (48-18), Essex (54-15) and Sussex (59-12) before losing to Lancaster (39-36). If the Mathews wrestlers had defeated Lancaster, they would have won their pool of the five-team round robin and advanced to the finals.
A.J. White was out all day with injury from practice. Jack Vrooman filled in for him at 182 lbs. This was Vrooman’s first match ever and he went 3-1. He gave a great effort against Lancaster as well, losing but avoiding a pin.
