The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team got revenge on the only team it lost to this season, beating New Kent in dramatic fashion Monday night in a five-set nail-biter.

Mathews was at a slight disadvantage going into the game, having missed practice for four days due to the flooding. The Devils were supposed to have hosted King and Queen last Thursday night, but that game was cancelled and has yet to be rescheduled.

The MHS girls came out pumped and ready to go, taking the first set, 25-23. The Trojans took the next one, 25-21. Mathews came back strong in the third set, winning by a seven-point margin, 25-18. The Devils had a chance to end it in four sets, at one point leading 19-13; but the Trojans got an eight-point run aided by two timeouts, shifting the momentum. New Kent won that set 25-21, forcing a fifth and final set.

In this last set, the Devils were up 13-9 and once again started to let the Trojans back in it. New Kent tied up the score at 13-13, and the two teams traded points until it was tied at 16.
