The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team dropped a close contest to the visiting York High School Falcons last Thursday night.
Mathews kept pace with the Group AA opponents through the first two quarters, taking an 18-16 lead into the halftime break, before falling behind in the third quarter as the Lady Devils fell, 44-34.
York scored eight quick points at the start of the third quarter and eventually outscored the home-standing Lady Devils by 15 in the quarter. Mathews was able to pick up their level of play behind a full-court press and man-to-man defense, but could not cut into the Falcons’ lead.
Savannah Wooten and Taylor South led the Blue Devils with 11 and seven points respectively. Shanice Williams added four points and Mariah Robinson added three points. Rounding out the scoring were Madison South, Hannah Rowe and Maria Spadaccini, with two points each.
JV girls fall, 24-21
The JV Lady Devils also had a close fight on their hands with the Falcons, and also lost, dropping a 24-21 contest last Thursday. Returning to the court after the Christmas break to face an AA team seemed difficult, especially coupled with multiple injured and sick players.
