After beginning the season with losses to Northumberland and Rappahannock, and a victory over Lancaster, the Mathews Blue Devils basketball team suffered a loss to Lancaster last Thursday, their second meeting this season, falling 53-48.
Though suffering a shortage of points, Mathews was led in scoring by Deondre Foster (21), Chris Perreault (10) and Cody Kelly (9).
Looking to rebound from a 1-3 start to the season, the Blue Devils traveled to Northumberland the following night to face the Indians, to whom they had lost earlier in the season. The Devils led for nearly the entire game, and strolled their way to a comfortable seven-point victory. Foster and Kelly remained a dominant force in this matchup, leading the Devils in scoring—15 for the both of them. Taiwan Forrest and Reggie
Johnson held their own with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
The weekend break provided rest for the Blue Devils, as they went right back to work on Monday, facing up against district-opponent King William at home. The Cavaliers proved inferior to a dominant Mathews offense, as the Devils routed the Cavaliers, 60-45.
This triumph was fueled by Foster and Kelly, who yet again led the team with 15 points each. Forrest provided 11 of his own. Foster hit a milestone in this game, eclipsing the 1,000-point mark in his career as a Blue Devil.
