The Mathews Rotary Club is holding its seventh annual Rockfish Tournament fundraiser on Dec. 14-15 at Morningstar Marinas, Cricket Hill, just across Milford Haven from Gwynn’s Island.
Tournament spokesperson David Fitch said participants can fish and weigh in fish one or both days, and only the heaviest will qualify for winning.
Registration is $150 per boat for four anglers and $25 per additional angler.
This year, the Rotary club is offering $5,000 in guaranteed cash prizes, with first place receiving $3,000, second place, $1,000 and third place, $700. Senior, youth and lady division winners receive $100 each.
The weigh station, at Morningstar Marinas, will be open Dec. 14 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Dec. 15 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Awards will be given at 5 p.m. on the 15th.
“Since 2005, our club has awarded over $17,000 in academic and vocational scholarships to Mathews High School graduates from the proceeds of this event,” Fitch said. “This is one of the largest fundraisers for the club and I’m proud to say last year, our tournament netted over $3,500 for our general fund.”
He said that support allowed the club to award a $1,000 merit scholarship and a $1,000 vocational scholarship to two students.
Funds that were raised also went toward the club’s annual community service project, which was awarded to the Mathews Adult Lifestyle Center for a fresh coat of paint, new fixtures and updated bathrooms.
The club also donated funds to Hands Across Mathews, American Legion, Boys & Girls Club of Mathews, Wounded Warrior Project, and Polio Plus.
