The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team picked up two wins this past week, capturing the Conference 42 tournament championship and advancing to regional play.

Mathews was scheduled to host Northampton on Tuesday night in the first round of regional play. However, high winds on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel caused that game’s postponement to last night. If Mathews wins, the Devils will advance to the regional semifinals and finals on Saturday at Northumberland High School.

Last Wednesday, in the first round of the conference tournament, Mathews had little trouble dispatching the visiting King and Queen Tigers, winning by scores of 25-15, 25-10 and 25-11.

Leading the team with kills for the night was Jacqueline Stewart with five. Anna Hudgins, Kayla Carter, Sophie Bandurco and Keely Crittenden followed behind each having three. Whitney Eriksen scored two kills, and Hailey Abernathy, Hannah Rowe, Kai McCann, Madison South, Morgan Driskell and Mariah Robinson had one each.
