The Gloucester Youth Football field located on the former Page Middle School campus will soon have new goal posts, thanks to a local welder and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science.

Billy Minter of Arc Angel Mobile Welding does welding work on vessels and lab equipment at VIMS, according to VIMS spokesman David Malmquist. During a recent visit to VIMS, Minter saw some aluminum piping and asked VIMS project manager Ron Herzick about its status. Minter has a young son who plays for GYF, so he knew of the need for goal posts.

Malmquist said Herzick learned from VIMS professor Steve Kuehl that the piping had been used in the collection of sediment cores. A recent change to the head of the corer meant it would now require piping of a different diameter, so the previously used 10 pieces of 21-foot pipe were set aside as surplus.
